Chair Pose Utkatasana

A strong standing pose, like sitting into an invisible chair, that fires up the legs and core.

How to do Chair Pose

  1. Stand with feet together or hip-width.
  2. Bend the knees and sit the hips back, keeping weight in the heels.
  3. Reach the arms up and lengthen the spine, breathing steadily.

Benefits

  • Strengthens the thighs, glutes and core
  • Builds heat and stamina
  • Improves lower-body endurance

A note on safety

Keep the knees behind or over the toes and the lower back long, not overly arched. This is general guidance, not medical advice. A qualified teacher can adapt this pose to your body, which is exactly what we do in our private sessions at home in Doha.

FAQ

Where should I feel Chair Pose?
In the thighs and glutes. Keep your weight in your heels so you feel the legs working, not the knees.

Practise it with a teacher
